Aug 23, 2019

ROME — The 76th Venice Film Festival will feature three Netflix productions alongside Hollywood titles, embracing the streaming giant again after the Cannes Film Festival excluded it for a second year in a row. Among Venice's 21 competition titles, which were unveiled Thursday in Rome, is the Netflix-produced Panama Papers drama "The Laundromat," starring Meryl Streep and Antonio Banderas, which couldn't run in Cannes. Netflix will also present "Marriage Story" and "The King," with the latter debuting out of competition. The world's oldest film festival also features Hollywood productions like "Joker" with Joaquin Phoenix in the comic book classic role,...

Camilleri, author of Montalbano detective series, dies at 93

Aug 23, 2019

ROME — Author Andrea Camilleri, creator of the best-selling Commissario Montalbano series about a likable, though oft-brooding small-town Sicilian police chief who mixed humanity with pragmatism to solve crimes, died in a Rome hospital Wednesday. He was 93. Italian RAI state TV, which produced wildly popular TV versions of his detective stories, interrupted its programming to announce his death and comment on his works. Rome's hospital system also announced the death, a few weeks after the long-ailing Camilleri was hospitalized with heart problems and complications from a broken hip. Camilleri's books — most set in his native Sicily — sold...

The 34-year-old Ronaldo was greeted by more than 100 fans Saturday on his arrival for standard medical tests. The fans shouted his name as well as chanting for him to win the Champions League for them as a smiling Ronaldo signed autographs and posed for selfies. Ronaldo will train for the first time under new Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri later Saturday. Ronaldo was signed from Real Madrid just over a year ago in the hope that the five-time World Player of the Year...

Teunissen wins Tour opening stage, Thomas crashes at end

Aug 23, 2019

BRUSSELS — Mike Teunissen claimed the first yellow jersey of this year's Tour de France with a sprint victory in Saturday's opening stage, which was marked by defending champion Geraint Thomas' crash in the finale. Thomas' Ineos team said he fell in the final meters but "feels fine." Another top contender, Jakob Fuglsang, also hit the tarmac about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the finish in a separate crash. The 26-year-old Teunissen, who became the first Dutch rider to wear the yellow jersey since Erik Breukink 30 years ago, edged former world champion Peter Sagan and Caleb Ewan on the...

Big music fest abruptly ended over security, fraud suspicion

Aug 23, 2019

BRUSSELS — A music festival in Belgium featuring major stars like rapper Cardi B came to a chaotic end before it had even started. Security concerns were ostensibly the reason behind the cancellation of the VestiVille festival in Belgium on Friday, though local officials have launched a fraud investigation. That's added a further layer of confusion and rekindled memories of the Fyre Festival, the failed music bash in the Bahamas in 2017 that was brought to the world's attention in a smash Netflix documentary earlier this year. Videos posted on Twitter show an elaborate stage apparently ready for the three-day...
