Jeff Ifrah to Host Panel on iGaming with NBA

GiGse has been the largest gathering of iGaming professionals from around the world.

Washington, D.C. - February 14, 2018 /MarketersMedia/ —

Attorney and iGaming investor and legal expert Jeff Ifrah has made his mark on the upcoming industry of virtual gaming and is being asked to lead a panel at the Global Interactive Summit and Expo to discuss the future of the growing market and the legalities surrounding sports betting and regulations. Ifrah will be presenting and moderating an interview with Vice President and Assistant General Counsel of the National Basketball Association, Dan Spillane, at the GiGse trade convention (Global Interactive Gaming Summit and Expo) in San Francisco to discuss the NBA’s significant shift in its opinion on sports-betting, and the future possibility of its regulation in the U.S.

Since 2011, GiGse has been the largest gathering of iGaming professionals from around the world who come to network, learn about new industry trends, and stay current on evolving gaming law. Ifrah’s highly anticipated interview with Spillane, which marks the first time a professional sports representative has participated in a gaming conference, will be enhanced by previously recorded interviews of leaders within the English Premier League, and leading US legislators pushing for sports betting regulation, all of which have been produced exclusively for the GiGse plenary session.

The NBA created a media stir with a notable November 2014 editorial by Commissioner Adam Silver, which called for the U.S. federal government to legalize sports betting as a way to make the inevitable pastime more transparent, safer for bettors, and subject to strict regulatory oversight. Illegal betting already accounts for $400 billion in wagers, by some estimates, primarily through unregulated offshore Internet services or the old fashioned backroom bookie. The article sent a seismic shock through the professional sports world, as the official NBA position for over twenty years had consistently opposed any expansion of sports betting. “Times are changing fast,” said Jeff Ifrah. “Ideas that were once unthinkable ten or even five years ago are now becoming more accepted as logic begins to supersede antiquated and sometimes arbitrary morality laws. The advantages of legal, regulated gambling clearly outweigh the negatives. Gambling happens, and no laws can stop it. But it can be taken out of the shadows to make it safer for everyone involved, especially the consumer who is currently at the mercy of unknown foreign website operators with no recourse for fraud. It’s great to see a prominent organization like the NBA take a bold position on the issue, and I look forward to my discussion with Dan Spillane at GiGse in April.”

Jeff Ifrah is the founding partner of Ifrah Law, based in Washington, DC, practicing law for more than twenty years, licensed to practice in New York, New Jersey, and Washington, DC. For four years in a row, Chambers USA has recognized him as one of the leading U.S. attorneys for litigation in the areas of Gaming and Licensing, as well as White Collar Crime and Government Investigations. Kosovo celebrates decade of independence, challenges ahead

Feb 20, 2018

PRISTINA, Kosovo — Kosovo is celebrating 10 years of independence from Serbia in two-day festivities that started Saturday amid reminders of the obstacles to the country's full acceptance. President Hashim Thaci said during a panel at the Munich Security Conference that his country's decade-long history was "a story of success," but he lamented the European Union's lack of unity over Kosovo's status as a membership candidate. "We are not yet a member of the U.N., while our journey to the EU is far too complicated," Thaci said. Five of the 28 EU member countries haven't recognized Kosovo's independence. Thaci said...

Italy's ex-premier Berlusconi campaigns against populism

Feb 20, 2018

ROME — Media mogul Silvio Berlusconi jumped into politics a quarter-century ago vowing to save Italy from the communists. Now he's waging a crusade to keep Italian populists out of the government. To be clear, the 81-year-old Berlusconi cannot seek his fourth premiership or even run for a seat in Parliament in Italy's March 4 election due to a tax fraud conviction. But he won't let himself be stopped by that — nor by years of sex scandals or a long list of criminal trials. And he is ignoring the toll that time has taken on his body, which has...

VAR help can't prevent Lazio from 2nd straight defeat

Feb 20, 2018

ROME — Even with help from the video assistant referee, Lazio lost for the second straight week in Serie A. Diego Laxalt leaped above Lazio defender Patric to score with a bouncing header in injury time as Genoa won 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico. Ten minutes earlier, Laxalt thought he had already scored the go-ahead goal but the score was waived off after video replays showed the Genoa midfielder used his hand to control the ball before scoring. The decision came eight days after Patrick Cutrone controversially scored in AC Milan's 2-1 win over Lazio after the VAR failed to...

Feb 20, 2018

BRUSSELS — Movie star Angelina Jolie says she and NATO's chief have agreed on ways to help the military alliance better combat the use of sexual violence against women and children in conflict zones. Jolie said Wednesday that wherever sexual violence occurs "peace is far harder and far more costly to achieve. It therefore has a direct bearing on NATO's efforts to protect stability." Speaking after a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in Brussels, she said: "We are going to focus on training, reporting, monitoring and awareness as a way of ending impunity." Jolie, a special envoy for the...
